7 Villas
Fredrikstad

Surface: 120 to 210 m2
Status: Completed

In collaboration with Solid Prosjekt, we have helped develop seven new and modern detached houses in Oredalen, spread into three different housing types between the seven owner-occupied plots.

The plot features century-old oak trees which we decided to conserve. The undisputable beauty of those stunning trees gives a charming atmosphere to the gardens, as well as providing natural shading in summer. The minimalist approach for the facades modernizes the traditional Norwegian house typology, without outstanding the surrounding neighbours of this residential area.

The extension of a small existing building on Kjøkøya duplicates the old house’s volume to create the new wing of the villa around a terrace to protect it from the wind. The two new volumes are connected to the old house by a glass tunnel, and to each other by the edge, shaping a continuous ceiling which waves along the two consecutive gable roofs’ sections, from the covered entrance at the back all the way to the living room in the front. This large room features a large bay window toward the sea of Kjøkøysund, as well as the artwork of the owner’s personal collection.

Clad with deep pine tree brackets, the facades live as the sun passes in the sky. The shadows between the brackets are constantly changing, and the natural pine tree cladding will acquire patina over time. A large terrace towards the sea extends over the terrain, whereas the volumes of the house sit on a solid stone foundation, inspired by the rocky site and the constructive techniques of the existing buildings of the site.
